South Carolina names Connor Mitch starting quarterback

South Carolina fans, your new starting quarterback is Connor Mitch. Steve Spurrier announced earlier today that Mitch has won the job. Multiple media reports passed along the news.

The redshirt sophomore beat out Michael Scarnecchia and Perry Orth. True freshman Lorenzo Nunez was also in the mix, and is still expected to see time under center this season.

Mitch played very little in two games last year, and was redshirted in 2013. His career stats are 2-of-6 for 19 yards.

Spurrier may have announced who will start out under center to begin the season, but that doesn’t mean Mitch won’t have a short leash. The “head ball coach” is known for pulling his signal caller out of the game to grab their attention.

If the Gamecocks want to win the SEC East in 2015 they will need solid production from Mitch. Georgia comes in as the preseason favorite with Tennessee in a close second.

South Carolina will open with a matchup against North Carolina on September 3rd.
