It was just a week ago that the nation was rocked with the news of the brutal murders of two Virginia journalists. There have been announcements of football teams dedicating their games and honoring the victims in the first game of the season. James Madison University is the latest school to announce that they would be honoring the lives of Allison Parker and Adam Ward.
According to JMU Sports, the Dukes will join Virginia Tech, Ward’s alma mater, by wearing special helmet decals honoring the two journalists. Parker was an alumna of James Madison in the class of 2012.
The team will also recognize them with a special moment of silence before the kickoff.
James Madison Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne said, “It is important for us as a community to come together in support after the tragic events of last week. Both Alison and Adam were shining lights for their alma maters, their families, their communities and their workplace at WDBJ.”
The university has also established a memorial scholarship named after Parker which will be awarded to students of the School of Media Arts. On Wednesday morning, the university held an emotional vigil remembering the lives of Parker and Ward.
The Dukes host the Morehead State Eagles at 6 p.m. on Saturday.
