Rutgers Scarlet Knights head coach Kyle Flood has said that his decision on who his team’s quarterback will be will come at halftime of the season opener against Norfolk State on Saturday. Flood discussed the decision with Keith Sargeant of NJ.com.
“Hayden Rettig is the starting quarterback,” Flood said. “We’re going to evaluate the first half and we’ll make a decision at halftime as to how we’re going to proceed.”
“We’re going to evaluate the first half of this game and then make our decisions going forward based on that,” Flood said. “To look beyond that, I think, would be very difficult.”
Rettig, an LSU transfer, drew the starting nod after presumed starter Chris Laviano was suspended for the first half following a curfew violation. Both men matched pace with each other throughout camp but if Rettig performs well in the first half, particularly at a certain level, it could be hard to bench him even if it is just the first game of the season.
It also doesn’t help that both players are built exactly the same at 6-foot-3, 210 pounds, so it could just come down to Flood deciding on which young man he feels is better suited for the job.
