Akron Zips premiere ‘Fear the Roo’ helmets

Set for a kickoff time at 7:00 PM ET, the Oklahoma Sooners and Akron Zips will meet for a non-con game in Memorial Stadium.

With Baker Mayfield predicted to start at quarterback and other offensive weapons, such as Samaje Perine and Sterling Shepard, Oklahoma’s new O.C. in Lincoln Riley should have a fairly simple task-at-hand with the Zips, who surrendered 277 points and a 121 QBR to opponents last season.

As the Sooners remain content with their starting line-up, not much can be said for the Zips, since the debate of starting either Kyle Pohl (2014 – threw for 2,189 yards in 10 games) or Tra’Von Chapman at quarterback is on-going heading into competition. In either decision, senior running back Conor Hundley will be the go-to man in trying to penetrate Oklahoma’s thick, tough-skinned defensive line.

Although unlikely to pull off the upset, the Akron Zips and their equipment management staff have released their special edition helmets featuring a golden kangaroo with “Fear the Roo” script, all of which hogs up the majority of the helmet’s rear side by the player’s neck. The matte black helmets will also show-off gold-plated metallic number stickers.
