High school football is an emotional game. Everyone from the coaches to the players to even the parents gets really intense about it, and the one group of people that suffers the most as a result are the referees.
It just so happens that one unlucky ref found himself on the receiving end of some misplaced aggression in a game between Marble Falls and San Antonio John Jay this weekend. After he made what was deemed a “bad call” by SAJJ, two players from the team intentionally nailed the referee with blindside hits, both of which were caught on video.
Northside Independent School District AD Stan Laing called the incident “disturbing” and said that an investigation into what led up to the cheap shots is underway. Both players were ejected from the game, but the fact of the matter is that a stronger punishment is needed. These players assaulted the referee, no matter how you spin it. If anything, they should be suspended for the rest of the season and the school should be fined.
Of course, Campus Sports will update this story as more information becomes available.
