Pitt, West Virginia agree to bring back the ‘Backyard Brawl’

Good news, college football fans. One of the best rivalries in the nation has returned.

On Thursday afternoon, the Pittsburgh Panthers and West Virginia Mountaineers announced that the two sides have agreed to bring back the “Backyard Brawl” beginning in 2022.

Pittsburgh will host the Mountaineers in 2022 and 2024, while the Panthers will travel to West Virginia in 2023 and 2025.

WVU’s Athletic Director, Shane Lyons, was eager to share the news.

I think this is a very exciting announcement for all of college football. We all know how conference realignment ended some long-standing rivalries, which have made the sport so special. Today, we are able to bring back one of the oldest rivalries in college football,” Lyons said in a release.

Pitt currently holds a commanding lead in the series — 61-40-3.

West Virginia will look to close that gap when the rivalry series makes its highly-anticipated return.
