UVA gets hard commitment from four-star SF

Regardless of Virginia’s last-second loss to Notre Dame yesterday, the game didn’t fail to bring in the attention of some recruits, particularly a four-star small forward from Philadelphia, DeAndre Hunter.

At 6-foot-7 and designated for the Class of 2016 of recruits, Hunter narrowed down his decision to join the Cavaliers after a back-and-forth with 11 schools back in August. Among other commitments for Virginia include Ty Jerome (G), Kyle Guy (G) and Jay Huff (PF).

And with two players – Mamadi Diakite and Memphis transfer Austin Nichols – filing as redshirts this year, the Cavaliers will ring in the 2015-16 season with a loaded freshman class that are the keystone to the ACC member’s future with head coach Tony Bennett acting as their mentor.

The Cavaliers won’t have to totally rely on their freshmen to perform, since two sophomores, Isaiah Wilkins (2014-15 – averaged 1.6 points, 2.5 REB) and Marial Shayok (2014-15 – averaged 3.8 points, 1.8 REB), accompanied the 30-4 Cavs of last season.

Virginia will tip off its season with Morgan State on November 13, while conference play doesn’t kick in until January 2 when Virginia plays host to – coincidence – Notre Dame.
