The Kentucky Wildcats men’s basketball team earned a pre-season number one in the polls for the second consecutive year, according to the Holy Bible of men’s college basketball rankings, Blue Ribbon.
Two teams that share the same interstates, Maryland and Virginia, round out the top three. However, No. 3 Virginia welcomes five new freshmen to their roster, so the Cavaliers might lose grip on their ranking before conference play even starts.
Synonymous with Kentucky basketball, the recruiting pool has never been deeper for the Wildcats, bringing in 2015’s No.1 recruit Skal Labisserie and a potential No. 1 recruit the following year.
And with the loss of Frank Kaminsky and Sam Dekker, Wisconsin is nowhere to be found in the table of 25.
Blue Ribbon editor Chris Dortch on the process of elimination in the top 25:
“As we began the process of putting together our book back in the spring, Kentucky wouldn’t have been our preseason No. 1. But then the Wildcats signed Jamal Murray from Canada in June. He’s so good we thought that, combined with the players returning and other great newcomers, including Skal Labissiere, the mix has the potential for another deep run in the NCAA tournament.”
