Jared Goff is one of the best quarterbacks in college football this season and is being compared to one of the best NFL quarterbacks in the game. According to Texas Longhorns defensive coordinator Vance Bedford, Goff is the second coming of Green Bay Packers and reigning MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers.
Through the two games that Goff has played this season, Goff has completed 41 of his 56 passing attempts for 630 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions.
There are quite a few comparisons between Goff and Rodgers’ games and it all starts with the California connection. Rodgers was the Golden Bears’ star quarterback to end his career and led the team to quite a bit of success. He has made a huge leap from last year to this season and Goff appears to be a legitimate NFL talent.
Goff possesses the ability to make plays from inside the pocket like Rodgers does, but he can also get outside the pocket and make plays on the run.
Bedford made a very confident statement about Goff being the second coming of Rodgers when talking to the media.
“This is Aaron Rodgers. He’s the real deal. This young man is exceptional.”
Whether or not the comparison to Rodgers is something that can be made with so much certainty or not yet is a different question. He certainly has the potential to become a special quarterback, but he has a lot of work to do before becoming a Rodgers type of quarterback.
Texas will have to deal with Goff this coming Saturday in a non-conference game with California. It will be a very tough test for the Longhorns’ defense and it will be interesting to see what kind of numbers Goff puts up.
Expect to see him come through with yet another big game and to shred the Texas secondary and prove his NFL potential first hand to Bedford and the Longhorns’ coaching staff.
