Though he has missed the last two games with a hip injury, Auburn is “hopeful” that sophomore defensive lineman Carl Lawson will return at some point this season. Coach Gus Malzahn offered more to James Crepea of AL.com.
“We’re still taking the day-by-day, week-by-week,” Malzahn said. “When we get back next week we’ll reassess. Maybe I’ll have some more information.”
There’s no denying that Lawson was missed in Auburn’s 45-21 loss to LSU yesterday, as quarterback Brandon Harris was not sacked once and star running back Leonard Fournette could not be contained.
Auburn running back Peyton Barber, who was Lawson’s teammate at Georgia’s Milton High School, also believes that his friend will play again this season.
“He’s definitely taking it tough, but at the same time I’m in his ear — he has a lot of people in his ear telling him to stay encouraged,” Barber said. “Carl could be back some time very soon.”
That would certainly be great, as Lawson already missed all of last year with a torn ACL and Auburn could use his help up front. Linebacker Tre’ Williams, however, said it best.
“He’s going to be back,” Williams said. “We need everybody we can and he’s working hard to get back and we do need him, but then again we have who we have and we’re going to proceed.”
Auburn looks to get back in the win column against Mississippi State next weekend.
