Boise State QB Ryan Finley out 8 weeks with broken ankle

The Boise State Broncos’ hopes of winning the Mountain West and also making one of the New Years 6 bowls have just taken a huge hit, as quarterback Ryan Finley is expected to miss the next eight weeks with a broken ankle. Broncos coach Bryan Harsin made the announcement, which was reported on Twitter by B.J. Rains of the Idaho Press-Tribune.

This means that if that timetable holds, Finley will miss six Mountain West Games with the opponents being New Mexico (for which he could potentially be back), Wyoming, Utah State, UNLV, Colorado State and Hawaii. A game against Virginia and a bye week are also in the mix.

Freshman Brett Rypien and sophomore Thomas Stuart could see some time under center in Finley’s absence, having gone a combined 17 of 22 for 196 yards and a touchdown this season, but that doesn’t take away from the fact that this loss’s timing is just plain terrible. With the team already having one loss, a heartbreaker to BYU, there is little room for error as the path to a Mountain West title and trip to the New Years 6 continues.

Campus Sports will update Finley’s recovery as more information becomes available.

Boise State’s next game comes on Friday night, when the team pays a visit to Charlottesville to play Virginia.
