Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn announced today that redshirt freshman Sean White will start at quarterback for Saturday’s home game against Mississippi State. John Zenor of the Associated Press reported the announcement on Twitter.
Malzahn: Auburn will start Sean White at quarterback against Mississippi State

This sends junior Jeremy Johnson to the bench after three consecutive weeks of uninspiring play. Since the start of the season, Johnson has thrown for 473 yards, five touchdowns and six interceptions despite completing 59.7 percent of his passes. The interceptions have become a problem, obviously, and Johnson needed overtime to defeat FCS opponent Jacksonville State in Week 2. Last week, Auburn lost to SEC rival LSU and fell out of the Top 25 despite being 2-1.
Thus, Malzahn has decided a change is needed in the form of White, a four-star talent out of the University School of Nova South in Fort Lauderdale. He’s a bit small for his position at 6-foot-1, 200 pounds, a far cry from the 6-foot-5, 240 pound Johnson, but the Tigers want to contend for a national championship and need to make some more noise if that is to happen, especially as an SEC team.
Kickoff against Mississippi State is slated for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN2, so stay tuned to Campus Sports for updates and highlights of White’s debut!
