Texas State Bobcats defensive coordinator John Thompson has resigned from his position, a choice that was all his own. Thompson’s decision was reported on Twitter by Football Scoop.

Thompson arrived in San Marcos in March of last year after having served in a similar capacity at Arkansas State the previous two years. He has helped coordinate defense at a number of schools including Ole Miss, Southern Miss, Arkansas, Memphis, South Carolina and others. Thompson also spent two years as the head coach of East Carolina, going 3-20 in two seasons.
His resignation could have been triggered by the fact that Texas State’s defense has been awful this season, ranking 126th in the nation in total defense and last in scoring defense. The Bobcats stand 1-3 and have shown few signs of turning around.
Texas State has not announced Thompson’s successor, but Campus Sports will update this story if any new information on the matter becomes available.
