On Saturday, Southern University’s third-year sophomore wide receiver Devon Gales suffered a serious spinal cord injury against the Georgia Bulldogs that left him hospitalized.
Gales underwent surgery on Sunday in Athens to stabilize fractures to his neck that he suffered while blocking on a third-quarter kickoff return. When trainers rushed to the field to assist Gales, he was laying motionless, although, he didn’t lose movement in his upper body.
According to a statement released by Southern University, Gales will remain at Athens Regional until he is released to return to Baton Rouge for further treatments.
The good news is that he is going to get some help with the financial burden of the injury he sustained because Southern University has established a fund to help with medical costs.
The hope is that the fund-raiser will help with a speedy recovery.
