Nevada Wolf Pack defensive tackle Rykeem Yates was suspended by the Mountain West Conference for one half of play following a second offense of player targeting. Kevin McGuire of NBC Sports’ College Football Talk reported Yates’ suspension.
This is by the book, as it should be.
Player safety is being taken more and more seriously on the collegiate level, and Yates is a senior now. He should know what does and doesn’t constitute targeting, even if his penalty may have just been dumb luck.
Thus, he will sit out the first half of this weekend’s game against UNLV, a team looking to pull even in the standings with its in-state rival. Hopefully, this is the last time that Yates gets flagged for targeting.
Kickoff between Nevada and UNLV is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
