3 Minnesota alums qualify for Olympic Trials

Three former Minnesota Golden Gopher wrestlers — Scott Schiller, Pat Smith and Tony Nelson — came away from Las Vegas with automatic bids to U.S. Olympic Team Trials in Iowa City in April.

Las Vegas was the site for the U.S. Nationals, an Olympic Qualifier event.

Schiller earned a second-place finish in the freestyle at 97 kilograms, knocking off top seed Dustin Kilgore in his opening match. Schiller lost the title match to Wynn Michalak.

Nelson placed third in the freestyle at 125 kilograms. Smith won four matches, the most of any of the Gophers, before falling in the final match to Olympian Ellis Coleman.

Six other Gopher wrestlers competed, although the did not place.

Among them were Alec Ortiz and Dylan Ness(both of whom wrestled Greco at 75 kilograms), Zach Sanders (freestyle, 57 kilograms), Jayson Ness, Chris Dardanes and Nick Dardanes (all of whom wrestled freestyle at 65 kilograms).
