It’s certainly an odd look, but football being played in a baseball stadium is not an unusual occurrence. In college football, there is the Pinstripe Bowl, which is played at Yankees Stadium and the Oakland Raiders and Oakland Athletics share a home stadium as well.
There is also the NHL Winter Classic, where a football stadium, either pro or college, is transformed into a hockey rink for an awesome outdoor experience. It looks like the NBA could be taking the hardwood outdoors in the near future as well.
According to ESPN, the Boston Celtics have been in discussion with the Boston Red Sox to host a game at Fenway Park in the near future. Celtics President Rich Gotham talked to the Boston Globe on Monday about the idea.
“I’ve gotten into it. I really like the idea,” Gotham told the Globe. “I think if you can find a way to sort of differentiate the game and make it fun for fans, that’s a great thing. And the Winter Classic certainly does that.
“Even when Fenway stages certain events, like football games, it just makes it more special for people involved and the fans. I think if you can do it, great. At the same time, my job requires me to be pragmatic, so you’d need to look at the hurdles.”
Outdoor games are pretty unusual for basketball since the weather affects the court and the play during the game more than it would in baseball or football. Despite that, it would still be an awesome sight to see if this were to come to fruition.
What do you think, basketball fans? Would an outdoor game be best for the NBA?
