During the Notre Dame Fighting Irish’s Fiesta Bowl loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes last weekend, star linebacker Jaylon Smith suffered a “significant” knee injury.
There was no word on the exact extent of the injury, but ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting Smith is set to undergo reconstructive knee surgery later this week; Thursday, to be exact.
Notre Dame OLB Jaylon Smith will undergo reconstructive left knee surgery Thursday, per sources. Has been top 5-10 draft projection.

It will be interesting to see what is next for Smith following his surgery.
According to Mortensen, Smith suffered a torn ACL and MCL.
If the timetable for his recovery is promising, we could see the Notre Dame star throw his name in the mix for the 2016 NFL Draft. However, if the recovery keeps Smith sidelined into next season, Smith could ultimately decide to focus on his rehab and return to Notre Dame.
Regardless of his decision, Smith appears to be a surefire top 20 pick when he decides to go pro.
