In a month, former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt will officially retire from tennis. His retirement marks the end of an era, when tennis was struggling to redefine itself post-Pete Sampras.
In a hard fought match yesterday against American Jack Sock, a match Hewitt won, the young Sock did a tremendous thing to honor the veteran. He yielded a point. Told Hewitt to challenge an out call that was reversed in Hewitt’s favor.
It not only highlighted the going out of a great tennis player, but marked and illuminated a young one. To think a young player–any player–would yield a point in order to secure honesty and integrity, above and beyond his own chance at a win, leaves me speechless.
