UNLV, coach Dave Rice part ways

UNLV has fired men’s basketball coach Dave Rice, according to Rob Dauster of NBC Sports.

Rice’s Runnin’ Rebels have lost five of six and currently sit at 9-7 (0-3 Mountain West) despite having a great deal of talent, including five-star freshman Stephen Zimmerman. But Zimmerman hasn’t been able to get a significant enough role in Rice’s offense and is averaging just 9.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game, so the administration felt a change was needed.

Assistant coach Todd Simon will take over on an interim basis.

Rice, 47, played at UNLV with program legends Greg Anthony and Larry Johnson and proved to be a decent enough recruiter in Sin City, but could never execute the proper formula to have a team take the next step. He made the Round of 64 in his first two years with the program, but missed out on the big dance the previous two years and appeared headed down that road again this year. He finishes with a record of 95-54 (37-32 Mountain West).
