The NFL has suspended Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict for Weeks 1-3 of the 2016 NFL season due to his making contact with Pittsburgh Steelers wideout Antonio Brown’s helmet on a tackle late in last weekend’s AFC Wild Card Game, which Pittsburgh won 18-15.

Burfict has a reputation as one of the NFL’s hardest hitters and the NFL said that his suspension was due to “repeated violations of safety-related playing rules.”
It should also be noted that Burfict was fined four separate times for illegal hits during the 2015 season, so this suspension isn’t at all a surprise. Throw in that Brown suffered a concussion as a result of Burfict’s tackle, and it’s a miracle that he only got three games.
The good news is that Burfict is only 25 years old, so there’s plenty of time for him to adjust his playing style so that he doesn’t get flagged as often. But there’s still no denying that he deserves this suspension, no matter how one spins it.
