NFC Championship features first QB matchup between Heisman winners

Over the weekend, the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals punched their tickets to the NFC Championship. While the AFC matchup between Peyton Manning’s Denver Broncos and Tom Brady and the New England Patriots will generate most of the attention because of the quarterback matchup, it is the NFC title game which will feature something for the first time in league history.

According to Elias Sports, the Cam Newton vs. Carson Palmer matchup will be the first time two Heisman Trophy-winning quarterbacks will meet as starters in the playoffs.

Palmer won his Heisman Trophy as a member of the USC Trojans in 2002, while Newton claimed the Heisman in 2010.

On the season, Newton has led the Panthers to an impressive 15-1 record. Most recently, Carolina jumped out to a big lead over the Seattle Seahawks before hanging on for the win. Arizona, meanwhile, was 13-3 on the season.

The Panthers and Seahawks will face off on Sunday, Jan. 24 at 6:40 p.m. ET.
