This Sunday, the WWE holds its 29th annual Royal Rumble with the WWE Championship being defended for the first time ever. It just adds a twist to what is, in my opinion, the greatest match type in the history of professional wrestling.
Putting 30 wrestlers — or 40 on one occasion — into a battle royal with a shot at the World Championship on the line made for some great moments, and amazing feud set ups down the line. From Kurt Angle and Shawn Michaels in 2005 to Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. Bret Hart in 1997, there has been no shortage of great moments within the main event match itself.
A good Royal Rumble is able to tell a great story from start to finish. Even if the end result is predictable — see Steve Austin in 2001 — a great Rumble can make up for any predictability.
So, with that being said, let’s rank every Royal Rumble match from 28 to one. Which one can lay the claim to being the greatest one of all time? Let’s take a look.
