Auburn running back Kerryon Johnson recently had shoulder surgery and will be sidelined for most of spring practice, coach Gus Malzahn told reporters. Brandon Marcello of AL.com reported the development, citing a team source.
A former five-star talent from the Huntsville, Alabama area, Johnson had 52 carries for 208 yards and three touchdowns in 2015. Given his injury and former teammate Peyton Barber’s decision to leave for the NFL, Auburn will lean on Jovon Robinson, Roc Thomas and three-star freshman and early enrollee Roc Miller at running back.
Robinson was Auburn’s second leading rusher with 639 yards and three scores in 2015, so odds are greater than none that he can put himself in a position to win the lead running back’s job for 2016 if Johnson’s shoulder surgery proves to keep him out longer than anticipated.
