NCAA formally charges Ole Miss with rules violations

The NCAA has formally charged Ole Miss with rules violations, according to a report from Yahoo Sports.

The university has received a Notice of Allegations that alleges roughly 30 violations in football, track & field and women’s basketball. Per association policy, the NCAA has not commented on the still ongoing investigation.

Neither Ole Miss nor the SEC has commented either, but the university now has 90 days to respond to the allegations.

At least some of the allegations, especially towards the football team, could be about recruiting. Per Yahoo’s report, the SEC has received a number of calls regarding Ole Miss, whose recruiting numbers under Hugh Freeze have been incredibly high, with the Rebels’ current class ranked No. 4 by Rivals.

On top of that, two of the Rebels’ football players in particular found themselves in hot water last year. Offensive tackle Laremy Tunsil missed half of the season as he was investigated for and later found to be receiving impermissible benefits, including three separate loaner vehicles over a six-month period, an interest free $3,000 loan, and others. He has since declared for the draft. Defensive end Robert Nkemdiche also got suspended for the Sugar Bowl after falling out of the window of an Atlanta hotel room and was charged with marijuana possession. Both have since declared for the NFL Draft.

Needless to say, if any of the allegations are found to be true, especially regarding the football team, the Rebels’ delightful turnaround under Freeze could soon be over should the NCAA decide to hit the university with sanctions.
