CM Punk will make his UFC debut at some time this year. It is likely that he will step into the Octagon with Mickey Gall at UFC 200, but nothing has yet to be confirmed.
Many UFC fans are not happy with Punk being in the company and believe that he used his fame from professional wrestling to earn a contract without ever having a fight. Most fans also want Punk to lose his first match handily in hopes that it would send him running out of the UFC.
UFC President Dana White talked about Punk and his first fight in the company. He said that if Punk were to lose, it would be up to him if he wanted to get back into the Octagon.
“That’s going to be up to him,” White said on the “Grant and Danny Show” on Thursday. “So CM Punk was a wrestler in the WWE, he was a big fan of the UFC and he ended up leaving the WWE and he said ‘Dana, my dream is to fight in the UFC, I want to fight in the UFC, will you let me fight?’ so we’re giving him a fight. We’re bringing in a kid who has obviously a little more experience than he does, if he wins this fight this Saturday he’ll be 2-0 and Punk is 0-0. We’ll see how it goes for him.”
So, basically, if Punk gets beaten easily by Gall, who is essentially a UFC rookie in his own right, it is his choice if he ever wants to return to UFC. Considering the way he bad-mouthed WWE in the months following his departure from the company, it’s pretty safe to say that he wouldn’t be returning there if doesn’t want to continue his UFC career.
Of course, if he wins, all doubt would be out of his mind and you could see him start to work towards a major title.
