Duke and North Carolina might be one of the greatest rivalries in sports history.
In their lastest meeting on Wednesday night, the Blue Devils were able to hang on to a win in a game that came down to the final possession. The final score was 74-73.
Williams surprised fans and critics by not calling a timeout on the final possession of the game. Instead, he allowed Joel Berry to take a shot that ended up being blocked by Derryck Thorton.
After the game, Williams took the blame for the loss.
“It’s my call, and I think you should always attack before the defense gets set,” Williams said, via USA TODAY Sports. “It was what I was taught. It’s the way I’ve always played. I told the kids I should have called a timeout. We didn’t get as good of a shot as I thought we would get, but that’s just what I’ve always believed in.”
Of course, a player would have been the one that needed to call the timeout thanks to a new NCAA rule.
Worth mentioning, btw, that new rules this year require a Carolina player (not Roy) would have had to be the one to physically call timeout.
