Flashback Friday: Joe Paterno named Penn State coach 50 years ago today

It’s officially “Flashback Friday,” which means there is no more appropriate time to look back on this day in history of sports and today, Feb. 19, just so happens to be the day that turned out to change the course of a college football program’s history.

On this day 50 years ago, the Penn State Nittany Lions officially announced the legendary Joe Paterno as the head football coach.

Thanks to Reddit, we can look back at that special day with an archived article from the New York Times.

While Paterno’s career at Penn State did not end as many would have hoped, he will always be loved in State College and his impact on the community and university will be everlasting.
