ESPN ’30 for 30′ to cover Nebraska’s 1994, 1995 football teams

ESPN’s ’30 for 30′ documentary series will soon do a film on Nebraska’s football teams from 1994 and 1995. The story was broken by WOWT, Omaha’s local NBC affiliate.

It’s definitely an interesting subject, as those Cornhuskers teams won back-to-back national championships under coach Tom Osborne and went a combined 25-0 over those two seasons.

However, those teams were not without controversy as they featured talented but troubled running back Lawrence Phillips, who could not seem to stay out of trouble away from the field despite being a star on it. In spite of that, Nebraska overcame the issues and went on to win those championships.

Speaking to WOWT, director Eric Drath spoke of his reasons for wanting to make the movie.

“Well when I first looked into the story it was just about the football and I said what a great football story and then when I started doing some research and all of the off the field stuff that was going on I was like wow my journalistic instincts picked up and I was like this is a much deeper story and it’s a human interest story too what these went through some of the things they did and obviously how they pulled it together to win these championships.”

The documentary likely won’t premiere until this coming fall, but should still provide some fascinating content for anyone who enjoys the ’30 for 30′ series and is also a Nebraska fan.
