Michigan State is new favorite to win NCAA Tournament

College basketball’s regular season is winding down, meaning that March Madness and the 2016 NCAA Tournament are just around the corner. That means that oddsmakers and gambling experts are making early picks as to who they think will be the last team standing out of a field of 64 (or 68, counting the First Four), and this season’s pick out of Vegas may shock some.

Per Vegas Insider, the Michigan State Spartans are the favored team to win it all this year, while Bovada lists the Spartans as a co-favorite alongside the Kansas Jayhawks.

It’s a bit of an unconventional pick, or is it? Michigan State has won seven of eight since losing three in a row and stand at 23-5 (10-5 Big Ten) and two games out of first place in the Big Ten. On top of that, coach Tom Izzo’s team is one of the most balanced in the game right now. Michigan State has strong guards, led by Denzel Valentine, and also fine big men in Matt Costello, Gavin Schilling and freshman Deyonta Davis.

It also helps that Michigan State made the Final Four last year and has plenty of returning players. Thus, with so much parity in college basketball this year, the Spartans are definitely a team to consider putting at the top of the list of teams likely to win it all this year.
