Jim Harbaugh to serve as MLB first base coach

Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh is going to be down in Florida soon for a week of practice with the Wolverines, specifically at IMG Academy in Bradenton, meaning he’ll be in the heart of MLB spring training territory. Sure enough, Harbaugh plans on catching some of America’s pastime while in the Sunshine State, and with a front row seat.

According to a report from Angelique S. Chengelis of The Detroit News, Harbaugh will serve as the Detroit Tigers’ first base coach for an inning of a Grapefruit League game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, who play their spring training games at Bradenton’s McKechnie Field. Chengelis also reports that Harbaugh could switch uniforms for an inning and serve in the same role for Pittsburgh.

“I told him with his passion for stirring things up, why wouldn’t he just half the game coach the game for the Pirates. I don’t think that’ll fly, but that’s right up his alley,” Pirates manager and Michigan fan Clint Hurdle said to The Bradenton Herald. “I’ve encouraged him to try and get out early to spend some time with our group and our team before the Tigers get onto the field.”

There’s no doubt that Harbaugh is a beloved figure in Michigan, and his appearing for the Tigers should bring a ton of Detroit fans to Bradenton. After all, he served as the first base coach for the Oakland A’s last spring, so why not keep it up with a visit to his home-state Tigers as they prepare for the regular season?
