The Chicago Bears are looking to get back into contention in the NFC in 2016 and they have just taken a big step in doing just that. One of their biggest players was possibly about to become a free agent, however, the Bears put a stop to that.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Chicago has just assigned its franchise tag to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery.
This should end up being the best thing for the Bears as it buys them more time to work out a long-term deal with their leading receiver. The Bears now should have a pretty dangerous passing attack with Kevin White returning from an injury that kept him out his entire rookie season.
During his career with the Bears, Jeffrey has caught 252 passes for 3,728 yards and 24 touchdowns. He was on track to go over 1,000 yards for the third straight season in 2015 before he missed half the season with an injury.
