Oregon State walk-on safety Gabe Ovgard has impressed coach Gary Andersen so much that the young man was rewarded with a scholarship yesterday. Of course, video of Ovgard’s reward was posted to the Beavers’ official YouTube page.
Set up so that certain players were receiving prizes of some sort, Ovgard appeared subtly surprised at receiving the great news after starting last season on the scout team. Check it out!

It’s great news for Ovgard, a redshirt freshman who appeared in six games last season and posted 23 tackles with an interception while playing primarily on special teams. Being a walk-on is tough, as one doesn’t have the same privileges as those on scholarship and also has to balance all football activities with a full class schedule, not to mention they’re responsible for their own meals and such.
But Andersen clearly sees something in Ovgard and as Oregon State continues to work hard towards contending in the Pac-12 again, having someone as passionate and hard-working as Ovgard will certainly help.
