Dick Vitale picks Michigan State to win it all?

Parity has been the name of the game in college basketball this season, meaning that it’s going to be incredibly tough to pick a winner once it’s time to fill out the tournament bracket.

However, don’t tell that to ESPN analyst Dick Vitale. Appearing on a conference call today, Vitale dropped a hint that he may be picking Michigan State to win it all.

“I love Tom Izzo and Michigan State,” Vitale said. “I love the combination of Izzo and Denzel Valentine. That formula to me equals a journey to the Final Four. Izzo’s brilliant at Tournament Time.”

Vitale then went on to describe how he would have “loved to be a fly on the wall” during Michigan State’s game against Rutgers last night, when the Spartans only led by two at halftime despite Rutgers not having a Big Ten win all season, only to go on a run in the second half and win by 31 points.

“I said to my wife, ‘Hon, I’d love to see Izzo at halftime’,” Vitale said.

No matter how you spin it, Vitale is right in that Michigan State should be considered a favorite to make it to the Final Four and beyond. Keep in mind that Izzo’s Spartans drew a No. 7 seed in the big dance last year, only to get hot and knock off No. 4 Louisville in the Elite Eight to earn a date with No. 1 and eventual champion Duke in the Final Four.

It also helps Michigan State this year that some key players have returned, namely star guard Denzel Valentine and shooter Bryn Forbes. The Spartans also have a great amount of depth in the frontcourt.

Thus, with conference tournament play starting soon, it’s going to be interesting to see if Michigan State can take last year’s success another step forward.
