Report: Knife found buried on O.J. Simpson’s former estate

Though former NFL running back and actor O.J. Simpson was acquitted of the murders of his wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman years ago, there has been a twist in the case that is only coming to light today.

TMZ is reporting that years ago, maybe as far back as 1998, a construction worker at Simpson’s former estate found a knife buried and handed it to an off-duty police officer that was working security on a movie shoot across the street. The problem is that instead of turning it in to evidence, the now-retired cop wound up keeping the knife.

As a result, in what TMZ described as a “top secret investigation,” the knife is now being tested for DNA, hair samples and perhaps blood residue.

But just why this alleged investigation is happening is a mystery. Even if new evidence is found that more or less proves Simpson did commit the murders of which he was acquitted, he cannot be charged or stand trial for them again thanks to double jeopardy, which means that one cannot be charged twice for the same crime.

On top of that, Simpson is currently serving time in a Nevada prison after being convicted on armed robbery charges, so there is really nothing to gain from this investigation except closure, if anything.
