Northern Iowa’s buzzer beater clinches MVC Tournament

Northern Iowa are the new Missouri Valley Conference champions after Wes Washpun’s shot attempt at the buzzer bounced off the backboard and fell through the basket to give the Panthers a 56-54 win over the Evansville Purple Aces in St. Louis, the site of the MVC Tournament this year.

The basket gave Northern Iowa its fourth MVC title in school history, all under coach Ben Jacobson, and also punched the Panthers’ ticket to the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

And let’s not forget that UNI has seen its share of success in the big dance, with Jacobson taking the team to the Sweet Sixteen in 2010 as a No. 9 seed following a win over No. 1 Kansas.

On top of that, UNI has defeated some significant teams already this season, namely North Carolina and also Iowa State. The Panthers also defeated last year’s MVC champions Wichita State twice this year, once during the regular season and again in the tournament semifinals.

Be sure to stay tuned to Campus Sports for further updates from the Panthers as they prepare for the big dance next week!
