Current Texas A&M head coach, Kevin Sumlin, will take some time off from spring practice with the Aggies in wake of his father’s death this past Sunday. He has returned to Indianapolis and will spend time with family this week.
Kevin Sumlin stepped into the position as Aggies head coach on December 10th, replacing Mike Sherman.
Bill Sumlin, Kevin’s late father, was a successful basketball and football coach as well in his hometown of Brewton, Alabama at Booker T. Washington High School. He was later a high school assistant principal in Indianapolis where he helped coach Kevin’s youth football, basketball, and baseball teams.
The elder Sumlin often talked about dealing with segregation in athletics when he was an educator and a coach. He gave an interview with the Dallas Morning News, in 2012 addressing the serious topic.
“When I get to talking about this stuff, I get to talk too much,” he has said ” … There’s too much to be happy about for somebody to come up and start questioning me about something I said about how bad things were. And yeah, they were. But that was then and this is now.”
Campus Sports sends its condolences the Sumlin family.
