Unranked Notre Dame stunned No. 19 Duke in the quarterfinal of the ACC Tournament in Washington DC, ultimately winning 84-79 in overtime thanks to a late second half run.
Zach Auguste led the Fighting Irish with 19 points and 22 rebounds and V.J. Beachem chipped in 19 points of his own. Not even 27 points from Grayson Allen could save the Blue Devils, who went without a basket for nearly 10 minutes thanks to a 19-2 run by Notre Dame.
The cold spell resulted in Duke shooting just 34 percent from the field and 31 percent from long range, usually the Blue Devils’ bread and butter. Notre Dame, on the other hand, shot 50 percent from the field as a unit and carried its never-say-die attitude from start to finish despite trailing 45-37 at halftime.
Fans will thus be robbed of a rubber match between Duke and North Carolina in the semifinal tomorrow, with Notre Dame taking that matchup instead.
Either way, the Fighting Irish have all of the momentum all of the momentum on its side right now and could be primed for a favorable seeding come Sunday.
