Texas A&M and head coach Billy Kennedy have agreed to a new five-year contract, according to an announcement from AD Scott Woodward.
There is no doubt that Kennedy has earned this contract, having fought through a late season losing streak to end up leading the Aggies to the SEC regular season crown. Entering today’s SEC semifinal against LSU, Texas A&M is 25-7 (13-5 SEC) and has looked strong as can be with a balanced offensive attack and strong interior play from Tyler Davis.
Texas A&M has also gone 96-68 under Kennedy’s watch and this year will make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2011, when Mark Turgeon coached Texas A&M before leaving for Maryland. For his career, the 52-year-old Kennedy is 307-247 across time with the Aggies, Murray State, Centenary and Southeastern Louisiana.
But it looks like Kennedy has now found a nice home for himself in College Station and has Texas A&M well on its way to establishing itself as a power in the tough SEC. What the future holds for Texas A&M is unknown, of course, but it’s looking like Billy Kennedy can now look forward to being a big part of it.
