Wichita State took a while to get rolling, but went on a pair of dominant runs throughout the game to ultimately dismantle a seemingly superior Vanderbilt team by a score of 70-50. Fred VanVleet and Ron Baker each scored 14 points as the No. 11 Shockers punched a ticket to Providence, Rhode Island, where they will face the No. 6 Arizona Wildcats and be a prime candidate for an upset.
Vanderbilt held its own with Wichita State in the first half, with the halftime score being a 30-30 tie, but the house fell down soon thereafter. Wichita State went on runs of 16-0 and 14-0 to just pull away and played excellent defense on the Commodores, who shot just 30 percent from the field and 16 percent from long range. Vanderbilt also shot just under 58 percent from the free-throw line, which is never acceptable under any circumstances.
Throw in 12 turnovers, and two things become certain: Vanderbilt beat themselves, and Wichita State is now looking like a prime Cinderella candidate.
