A newer version of the PlayStation 4 could be in the works by Sony.
According to a report from Kotaku, the company is working on a PlayStation 4 console that would see increased graphical power as well as allow games to run at 4K resolution. It would also help increase the performance of the company’s Virtual Reality offerings with PlayStation VR.
The console is being dubbed as “PS4.5” by developers, and the company has apparently already started informing developers about the plans for the console.
For those who don’t know, 4K resolution features four times the amount of pictures of 1080p. Right now, the console can output 4K photos and videos, but not games. This would change that issue on the system.
There is no word as to whether current PS4 owners will be able to upgrade their current systems, or if they’ll have to buy a brand new console. Should it be the latter, one would assume that Sony would offer a special trade-in offer to entice users to make the upgrade. There was also no mention on what a potential price point would be for the updated version of the PS4.
Campus Sports reached out to Sony for comment on the matter, but we were given a generic “We don’t comment on rumors.” response by the company.
