Stephen F. Austin drops West Virginia in Upset

The day of the underdog continued on Friday night as the No. 14 Lumberjacks of Stephen F. Austin took down No. 3 West Virginia, 70-56, to move to the round of 32 on Sunday.

The win makes the Lumberjacks the ninth double-digit seed to win in the first round of this year’s tournament. That number is tied for the most in tournament history.

Thomas Walkup had a game-high 33 points for the Lumberjacks, and team-high nine rebounds. The next closest scoring player had 14 points, and that was teammate Clide Geffrad Jr. The Wolverines were led by Devin Williams, who finished with just 12 points but had an incredible 17 rebounds.

Stephen F. Austin came out slow, falling behind 20-11 halfway through the first half. But a 10-2 run brought the Lumberjacks to within one point near halftime. They would close out the half up 31-28.

The second half saw the Lumberjacks pull away from the Mountaineers.

They scored the first seven points of the half to build a 10-point lead, and just never looked back. Stephen. F. Austin outscored West Virginia 39-28 in the second half thanks to tough defense, and excellent passing.

The Lumberjacks now have a date with the winner of the matchup between No. 6 Notre Dame and No. 11 Michigan. Should they win on Sunday, it’ll be the first time in school history that they reach the Sweet 16.
