Former Ohio State captain Jim Herbstreit, father to former Ohio State quarterback and ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, has passed away at 77 according to The Columbus Dispatch. Herbstreit had suffered from Alzheimer’s for the past two years and “died suddenly this morning,” according to his son.

“It’s a tough day for my family and I,” Kirk Herbstreit said in a brief statement, while also posting to Twitter.

Overwhelmed by the well wishes about my Dads passing. I truly am. Thanks to every single one of you. God Bless. https://t.co/eEV8vz2kAC

Jim Herbstreit played running back and defensive back for the Buckeyes and was coached by the legendary Woody Hayes. He would go on to enter coaching himself after graduating in 1961, serving under Hayes as an assistant that same season and being part of a staff that won a national championship. Herbstreit would then move onto Miami-Ohio and serve under Michigan Wolverines legend Bo Schembechler for two seasons before leaving coaching and entering business.

Campus Sports sends its deepest condolences to the Herbstreit family during this time.
