Fifth-year senior Tyler O’Connor is currently leading Michigan State’s quarterback race, according to Spartans coach Mark Dantonio.
“O’Connor’s going to go in as the leader at that situation, but that’s going to bear out over August camp and really, I think, over the first couple games,” Dantonio said to reporters Monday, including Jeff Seidel of The Detroit Free Press. “We’ll see how everybody performs. We’re going to give everybody opportunities.”
A former three-star recruit from western Ohio, O’Connor has appeared in 12 games during his time in East Lansing and has completed 63 percent of his passes for 374 yards and four touchdowns in highly limited action. Oddly enough, he is the most experienced quarterback on the roster as Michigan States searches for Connor Cook’s successor. Joining him in the battle are junior Damion Terry and freshmen Brian Lewerke and Messiah deWeaver.
O’Connor is perhaps best known for being the one to lead Michigan State to a rain-soaked victory over Ohio State in Columbus last season, completing 7 of 12 passes for 89 yards as the Spartans won 17-14 and subsequently knocked the Buckeyes out of the race for the College Football Playoff.
