Alaska HS basketball team saves tenants from apartment fire

It’s not often that local sports teams become local heroes in the most literal sense of the word, but the basketball team from Alaska’s Sitka High School became just that.

According to a report from The Alaska Dispatch News, the team was in Anchorage for the state tournament and saw an apartment complex on fire while en route to breakfast. They took action and, as a result, nobody was injured in the fire. All in all, because the players took initiative and banged on doors and windows to alert people, a dozen lives were saved.

And who says that sports heroes can’t be actual heroes? Under regular circumstances, the players and coach Andy Lee may have just called 911 to get the fire department to the scene, but they did more than that. Simply put, the bar for community outreach has been raised.
