Syracuse’s late layup stuns Gonzaga in Sweet Sixteen

A late layup by Michael Gbinije and clutch defense from Trevor Cooney and Tyler Lydon helped No. 10 Syracuse rally against No. 11 Gonzaga and punch a ticket to the Sweet Sixteen with a 63-60 victory.

Gbinije’s layup capped a 20-point performance as Syracuse overcame an ugly shooting night (36 percent from the field) and using only seven players to punch the Orange’s first trip to the Elite Eight since 2013.

At first glance, it looked like a Gonzaga win was all but a certainty. The Bulldogs came out shooting hot in the first half and though Syracuse rallied, Gonzaga was still in control. Gonzaga still led for most of the second half, but not even a 23-point night from Kyle Wiltjer and a 19-point, 17 rebound performance from Domantas Sabonis could save the Bulldogs.

Michael Gbinije simply had other ideas, and now Syracuse is a win away from the Final Four after earning a controversial at-large bid.

And the Orange will have to defeat ACC rival and No. 1 seed Virginia to get to Houston, so be sure to tune in Sunday for what should be a great game!
