The New York Jets will host Memphis quarterback Paxton Lynch on April 14, according to a tweet from NFL Network’s Albert Breer.
This is an interesting development, as Lynch’s draft stock has fallen tremendously since the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis in February, but the Jets could definitely be in the market for a quarterback. Free agency negotiations with Ryan Fitzpatrick have stalled in recent weeks, meaning that coach Todd Bowles could be forced to roll with either the ineffective Geno Smith or the raw and inexperienced Bryce Petty next season.
That is, of course, unless GM Mike Maccagnan opts to use the No. 20 pick on Lynch, whose ability to improvise and move in the pocket could wind up being ideal in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s spread offense.
But let’s not forget that with no market for Fitzpatrick materializing anywhere except the Jets, this could simply be a negotiating ploy on team management’s part.
