Jake Bentley to join Gamecocks in 2016

Four-star quarterback Jake Bentley will forego his senior year of high school and enroll early at South Carolina, according to a statement posted to his Twitter.

Bentley, who currently attends Alabama’s Opelika High School, near Auburn, is the son of Gamecocks running backs coach Bobby Bentley. Already 18 years old and standing 6-foot-4, 219 pounds, he grades out as a pocket passer.

And just how he’ll fit in with the Gamecocks in 2016 is a mystery, as South Carolina is loaded at quarterback. On top of Bentley, four-star talent Brandon McIlwain is already enrolled, on campus and participating in spring practices. Connor Mitch is also expected to be back in 2016 after missing all but two games last season due to injury.

But there is also the fact that the Gamecocks are painfully thin at quarterback this spring, with Perry Orth and Lorenzo Nunez both out with injuries. That said, given Bentley’s overall skill, it’s going to be interesting to see where he fits on first-year coach Will Muschamp’s initial depth chart.
