Notre Dame offensive lineman and future first-round NFL Draft pick Ronnie Stanley is meeting with the San Francisco 49ers this weekend, according to NFL.com. Per the report, Stanley is one of many prospects visiting the team this weekend. Others include UCLA linebacker Myles Jack, Ohio State’s Eli Apple and Clemson’s Mackensie Alexander, among others.
And Stanley could wind up being an excellent addition to a San Francisco team that needs all the help it can get after going 5-11 last season and looking to turn a new leaf under coach Chip Kelly in 2016. The offensive line is hurting after losing guard Alex Boone to the Vikings in free agency and though Stanley would probably play right tackle, help is help.
Granted, the Niners do have some greater needs, like a quarterback or even defensive back, but the draft mantra should be “Protect Colin Kaepernick” assuming that the former second-round pick is not dealt before Draft Day. In such a case, Stanley would be an excellent pick at No. 7.
