Josh Gordon almost got traded to the 49ers

Troubled Cleveland Browns wide receiver Josh Gordon’s future is in further limbo after reports that he failed yet another drug test, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter just tweeted an interesting tidbit about what could have been regarding the former Baylor star.

That tidbit? Well, a few years back, Gordon was almost traded to the San Francisco 49ers when the Niners were dealing with injuries to Michael Crabtree and Mario Manningham.

This happened in 2013, the same year that Gordon would go on to lead the NFL in receiving despite missing the first two games due to a suspension. However, given all of the issues that San Francisco had during that time as well, there’s every chance that he would have run into the same off-field issues.

Consider this. 2013 is when Niners linebacker Aldon Smith first started having his run-ins with the law, and San Francisco led the NFL in arrests during Jim Harbaugh’s tenure with the team. It was a toxic environment and if Gordon got into simple drug or alcohol related-trouble with the Browns, chances are things would have turned out much worse in San Francisco.
